9.30 - 10.30am: Hilde Cannoodt: Bringing Meaning To Our Dance

lecture

Dance is a language. Isn't it? How can we use dance & movement to create meaning, to communicate something to our audience? In this lecture we will discuss different communication tools using the dance as a medium. Through video footage we will discuss the difference between direct and relational meaning. Through analysis we will be able to be more clear as to the message we want to articulate to our audience. As performers it is important to think critically about the way we communicate to our audience to bring clarity to our performance. This clarity could be a message of joy, or intentional discomfort and confusion. We will be looking at Jakobson's Communication Model as well as Valerie Preston Dunlop's Nexus Of The Strands Of The Dance Medium and learn how this information can relate to dance and performance.
